Car developed problem - do we sell it or donate it?

We have a 99 Camry with 167K miles w/a great interior,great engine ,very smooth ride. We were planning to sell it for approx 2K, obo. Now the coolant has drained out due to a leak, and our mechanic tells us we will need a new water pump, and by the way, a timing belt since it makes sense to replace it at the same time, at least a $700 repair. We are thinking of donating the car. When we told our mechanic this, he said he might want to buy it and what did we want for it. We don't know how much the car is worth now or what would benefit our pockets most, the sale or the donation. What to do?--Help!
